Robin Rothenberg
—Yoga Therapist

Abhyāsa Yoga is hosting Robin Rothenberg, IAYT President, co-author and teacher of the protocol and classes based on the landmark USA National Institute of Health (NIH) Study and years of Robin's experience training teachers and therapists.

  • Highly involved in Yoga Research since 2000, Robin co-authored the protocol and taught the classes for the landmark study Comparing Yoga, Exercise, and a Self-Care Book for Chronic Low Back Pain: A Randomized, Controlled Trial published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in Dec. 2005. A reported 78% of participants experienced reduced lower back pain and increased quality of life through Yoga Therapy. Using the same protocol, a follow up study was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in Oct. 2011. The incredibly positive results from these studies formed the basis for the publication of Robin’s first book, The Essential Low Back Program and subsequent Essential Low Back Training Program for Yoga Teachers.  Robin’s ground-breaking work in the field of yoga research has been written about in the New York Times, Seattle Times, Yoga Journal, Fit Yoga, and Natural Health.

  • This Program is based on a landmark USA National Institute of Health study and years of Robin's experience training teachers and therapists.

Enhance your offering as a Yoga Teacher, Yoga Therapist, Medical Practitioner or Allied Health Professional through this Training, providing valuable tools and practices that focus on healing and back pain management. Upon successful completion of the optional Practicum Component, you will be well equipped to use the manuals and curriculum to host your own Lower Back Care Programs,  delivering an effective approach for the many people seeking alternatives for their back pain.

  • Back pain remains one of the most prevalent medical complaints, leading to decreased quality of life and increased healthcare costs. Emerging research indicates that incorporating therapeutic yoga into treatment plans can significantly alleviate back pain and improve patient outcomes. Around 4.0 million (16%) people in Australia were estimated to be living with back problems, according to self-reported data in the 2022 Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) National Health Survey (NHS) (ABS 2023). Back problem prevalence increased with increasing age and was similar for males and females. About 70% to 90% of people are expected to experience low back pain at some point during their lifetime (AIHW 2023; ACSQHC 2021).
